What Does a Porsche Gearbox Rebuild Cost?

The honest answer is: between roughly 1,400 and 15,000 euros net. That range is not evasion — it has concrete reasons, and this page explains them.

Why the range is so wide

A classic Porsche gearbox is not a component with a fixed price but an individual case. Two gearboxes of the same type, both fifty years old, can differ by a factor of ten in the work they need.

At the lower end is a gearbox that has run but was looked after: synchro rings, bearings, shaft seals and small parts are due, the gears are usable and the final drive carries cleanly. Work of that kind comes to around 1,400 euros net.

At the upper end is a gearbox where load-bearing parts have to be replaced that have not been available for decades. We then make them new — gears, shafts, stub axles, complete final drives. The ceiling there is around 15,000 euros net.

Racing gearboxes are a case of their own. A gearbox for the RSR starts at around 20,000 euros net and is open-ended, because almost every part is a special production.

All figures are net, that is, before VAT. For private customers that comes to roughly 1,670 to 17,850 euros gross, and from about 23,800 euros for a racing gearbox.

What determines the price

  • Condition of the gears
Worn teeth are the single largest cost item. If the gears are usable, it stays inexpensive.
  • Availability of parts
What can still be bought is cheaper than what we remanufacture from a pattern.
  • Housing
Worn bearing seats can be machined, oversized coated bearings fitted or new bearing mounts shrunk in — each step costs more.
  • Extras
A limited-slip differential, a different ratio or spray-oil cooling are additional work, not repair.
  • Earlier repairs
A gearbox someone has already been into often costs more than one in original condition — particularly where the final drive was set up incorrectly.

How you get to a binding price

A sound fixed price is only possible after the gearbox is stripped. So the order of work is:

  1. Send in the gearbox — how that works is set out on Send In Your Gearbox.
  2. Strip and measure — every part is cleaned, inspected and measured.
  3. Binding quotation — you receive a breakdown of what is genuinely needed and decide how far the rebuild should go.
  4. Work begins only after your approval.

You are not paying into the unknown. And you get every replaced part back, along with photographic documentation of the work.

Is a rebuild worth it at all?

On a classic Porsche, almost always. A properly rebuilt gearbox lasts decades again, and a car with a documented gearbox rebuild is worth more on resale than one with an unclear history. The point of comparison is rarely a new gearbox — for these types there is none — but a used one with unknown internals.

If you are unsure whether the work is worth it, send the gearbox in for assessment. After the strip-down you will know where you stand.

Common questions

01 What does a Porsche gearbox rebuild cost?

The range runs from about 1,400 to 15,000 euros net. A gearbox needing synchro rings and bearings sits at the lower end. Where gears, shafts or the final drive are damaged and have to be made new, it moves up. Racing gearboxes for the RSR start at around 20,000 euros net and are open-ended.

02 Why do you not quote a fixed price up front?

Because the condition of bearings, gears and final drive cannot be judged before the gearbox is opened. Any figure named beforehand is guesswork. We strip it first, measure every part, and then put a binding quotation in front of you — work begins only once you agree to it.

03 What drives the price up?

Above all parts that are no longer available and have to be made new — gears, shafts, stub axles, final drives. Then extras such as a limited-slip differential, a changed ratio or spray-oil cooling. A gearbox that only needs the usual wear parts stays at the lower end.

04 Are these net or gross prices?

All figures are net, that is, before statutory VAT. For private customers 19 per cent is added — 1,400 euros net becomes 1,666 euros gross, 15,000 euros net becomes 17,850 euros gross. VAT is always shown separately on the invoice.

What is on your bench?

Gearbox type and a few lines about your request — that is all we need for a first assessment. A photo helps but is not required. The answer comes from the machinist, not from sales.
