8:35 final drive for the Porsche 915 gearbox

Porsche 915 Gearbox Rebuild

Rebuild to factory specification, 8:35 final drive, limited-slip differential and stub axle

The 915 is our most requested gearbox: rebuild to factory specification, the 8:35 final drive in RS/RSR ratio, limited-slip differentials for every variant and the long-discontinued stub axle as a new production.

What we do on the 915 gearbox

  • Rebuild to factory specification
complete stripping, measurement and reconditioning — hypoid drive set up with original tooling, test-bench run at the end.
  • 8:35 final drive (i = 4.375)
the short RS/RSR ratio as a new part — teeth ground on drive and coast side to 0.0025 mm, serial-numbered, with measurement report and etched setting dimension. It replaces the 7:31, whose tooth spread at the pinion head is unfavourable — on almost every second gearbox it is damaged.
  • Limited-slip differential
available for 18- and 43-spline shafts and for the variant with mechanical oil-pump drive — for the 915/72 with oil cooler coil, complete with Turbo stub axles; long unavailable from Porsche. We make the internals ourselves: planet gears, side gears and pressure rings with interchangeable set-up.
  • Stub axle, 43 splines, Ø 109.90 mm
a direct replacement in original appearance — long discontinued by the manufacturer.
  • Rotation-direction change
for mid-engine conversions, with fresh setting of the hypoid drive.

Typical problems this solves

  • Crunching second gear — the 915 classic: worn synchromesh and dog teeth
  • Howling final drive after an improperly set ring-and-pinion swap
  • Worn stub axle with no original replacement available
  • Standard ratio too long for hillclimbs or circuits

Why inquire here

We know hardly any gearbox better. From a single dog ring to the complete homologation-ready racing gearbox, everything for the 915 comes from one workshop — measured, documented, test-bench run.

What a rebuild finally costs depends on the findings. The range and the reasons behind it are in our guide What does a Porsche gearbox rebuild cost?.

Common questions

01 Which Porsche models used the 915 gearbox?

The 915 gearbox was fitted to the 911 from 1972 to 1986. That includes the 911 S, T and E (1972–73), the RS and RSR 2.8 (1973), the 911 2.7 (1974–77), the Carrera 2.7 MFI (1974–76), the RS and RSR 3.0 (1974), the 3.0 Carrera (1976–77), the 911 SC 3.0 (1978–83) and the 911 3.2 (1984–86).

02 What is the typical fault on a 915 gearbox?

A crunching second gear is the classic 915 complaint, caused by worn synchromesh and dog teeth. A howling final drive usually goes back to a ring and pinion that was never properly set up after an earlier repair.

03 What ratio does the competition final drive for the 915 have?

The 8:35 final drive corresponds to a ratio of i = 4.375 — the short setup used in the 911 RS and RSR. The Porsche reference number is 915 302 911 02.
